Wildcats show their claws in Newcastle

24 Jun, 2009 04:00 AM
THE Parramatta Wildcats scored a comfortable win over the Hunters in the Waratah Basketball League's men's competition in Newcastle on Saturday.

The last quarter was less comfortable than coach Dave Reimer would have wanted, however.

Promoted youth league players would have learned a valuable lesson, as a 25-point lead at final quarter-time was reduced to 103-93 by the end.

The Wildcats' match was notable for the absence of Damian Martin.

No more accomplished, committed and popular player has represented the Parramatta team.

Martin's dual selection for the Australian Boomers squad and the Perth Wildcats in the new NBL, has seen his Parramatta Wildcats commitments come to an end.

Coach Riemer has been left with a skinny playing roster but the squad is playing with such confidence, the youth league players' inclusion caused little concern.

Hunter guard Matt McGovern was scintillating and led the late resurgence but Reimer showed confidence in his rookies by keeping his starting five on the bench.

Meanwhile, the Wildcats women were beaten by 45 points and have both hands on the wooden spoon.

The Wildcats host the Northern Suburbs Bears at Auburn this Saturday, the women tipping off at 4pm and the men at 6pm.
