Shooting Comets beat Cats

08 Apr, 2009 04:00 AM
PARRAMATTA Wildcats fell to the Sydney Comets 142-112 in a point-scoring extravaganza in round five of the Waratah Australian Basketball League at Auburn Stadium on Saturday night.

If there is champagne basketball, then the teams served up a magnum.

Both delivered some of the best shooting seen in NSW in recent seasons.

The Wildcat men were without five regulars, including Goran Veg, Anto Lalic and Graeme Dann (all playing in a tournament in the Philippines) and regular sixth man Charles Bloemen, but shot 52per cent from the field.

This still wasn't good enough against a Comets whose team included former Wollongong Hawks and now Gold Coast Blaze NBL shooting guard Daniel Joyce.

He hit 12 of 15 three-point attempts in his 41 points (at 64per cent), while the Wildcats star recruit Stefan Blaszczynski hit an impressive 34 points (at 50per cent).

The Comets stole the game in the third quarter with a whirlwind 46 points a tally some teams would struggle to reach in two quarters.

The game's only ugly moment came in the third quarter, with first Richard Clarke (Wildcats) and then Chris Stauber (Comets) being ejected from the game.

Meanwhile, Wildcats women's head coach Doug Zivcic will ponder where to go with his young and inexperienced squad after another heavy defeat.

The Wildcats at least showed big hearts by winning the final quarter 14-13 after being down 64-17 after the first three breaks.

The Wildcat men will be back in action against the Maitland Mustangs in Maitland on April25, then both Parramatta teams play the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at Warriewood on May2.
