Orioles, a game shy of clean sweep

18 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
ONLY a 3-3 draw in the first-grade first game denied the resurgent Orioles a clean sweep in round nine of the major baseball league.

Orioles had all their bad luck in the bottom of the ninth when pinch-hitter Chris Ings was denied first base after being hit by the pitched ball.

The umpire ruled the ball had come off his bat.

Game two was a different story.

The Orioles hitters blasted 12 hits, scoring six runs. Dane Wigg went three from five, looking to regain his lead in the batting championship.

Meanwhile, the seconds gave their coaches a few more grey hairs when they let the visitors score three runs straight up.

They need not have been concerned, however. Orioles scored eight runs in reply, batting 12 hitters in the first innings.

Thirds met a disorganised opposition and won comfortably 12-8.

The Under-18s held out Macarthur 3-1.

The Orioles host Baulkham Hills this weekend.
