You can keep streets safe

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione has launched a major state-wide campaign to curb binge drinking and alcohol-related violence.

Called ``It's About You'', the campaign will run throughout summer.

``It presents the perfect opportunity to warn revellers to exercise responsibility,'' Commissioner Scipione said.

``It's about you as the punter, it's about you as the driver, it's about you as a mate, it's about you as the bouncer, the taxi driver, the parent of teenagers, the publican, the barmaid the list goes on.''

Parramatta Superintendent Philip Flogel said police would target licensed premises in and around the Parramatta CBD for anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related crime.

``This is a statewide campaign but, in our area, we'll be making sure people who attend licensed premises will consume alcohol responsibly and behave appropriately.

``We want people to be able to come to Parramatta to enjoy themselves and be safe.

``In our area, the summer months see a swell in population and, with the warm weather, we've seen some bad examples of aggressive, drunken behaviour.

``We can deploy as many police as possible but individuals need to take responsibility for their own behaviour.

``Warm weather and good times go together but don't let your enjoyment of alcohol turn you into a criminal or a victim of crime.

``It's about you,'' Superintendent Flogel said.

Commissioner Scipione said while police did their best to create safe environments and deal with troublemakers, they could only do so much.

``The individual always has a choice to stop drinking when they've had enough,'' he said.

``They can choose to walk away from a fight over a spilt drink or a vacant cab and to not get in their car and drive home.

``The alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour we witness on Friday and Saturday nights around NSW is a disgrace.

``It gets worse in summer when more people are out and about.''
