WALKING the Kokoda Track last month was a life-changing experience for Katie Skinner, 19.
Parramatta RSL Club sponsored the West Hoxton resident on her journey, which was under the auspices of the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge a peer group leadership program promoted by the RSL and Services Clubs Association.
Each day of her 96kilometre trek, Ms Skinner recorded her thoughts and feelings in a diary.
On the third day she was missing her home and family: ``I think so far I have cried every night I have been here. Today we just walked up and down, up and down. It just went on for seven hours... today I was pushed past my physical limit.''
By the fourth day, her mood had begun to lift: ``Today was not as hard as yesterday. I was feeling a lot happier and starting to talk to people more. They are really nice and some help me when there is a tough part. I feel happy that I got through last night and that I am still here.''
By the 10th and final day of the trek she was transformed: ``Looking back I am so grateful that I had this opportunity to experience the Kokoda track... One of the most important things I have learnt is to remember the young men who sacrificed their lives so we may have a rich one and to honour them by doing our best to lead successful and significant lives.''
The Challenge program was developed in consultation with former Australian Army Major, Charlie Lynn, now involved with the trekking company Adventure Kokoda.
It is directed towards young people at school and disadvantaged or unemployed people who are having difficulty finding their way in society.
The program is also used to encourage young achievers who may have natural leadership skills.
