Toxic rubbish scare

18 Nov, 2009 09:09 AM
AN ILLEGAL dumping of what is believed to be asbestos-ridden fibro has outraged residents and highlighted the inadequacy of the State Government's new state environmental planning policy (SEPP).

A tip-off notified the Parramatta Sun to the pile of material at a Greystanes shopping centre car park last week.

Post office worker Julie Piscopo said: ``I have had a lot of family and friends die from asbestos-related diseases. I was mortified when I saw it there.

``I've just told the girls to keep away from there, because I don't want any one of them getting sick or dying from it.''

Ms Piscopo, who works at Australia Post which is near the car park where the asbestos was dumped, was furious.

``They are bloody idiots,'' she said, referring to the dumpers.

Her sentiments were reflected in a recent Holroyd Council internet poll. Over 90 per cent of respondents called for the reinstatement of stricter, council controlled asbestos removal.

Councillor Greg Cummings (Labor) said he and his fellow councillors were lobbying hard to alter the SEPP laws and encourage a safer removal policy.

``We had a meeting with the Minister for Planning, Kristina Keneally, last Tuesday where we voiced our concerns about the new state laws which mean builders can bypass council,'' he said.

He said he was pushing a radical approach which he believed would ultimately save lives.

``If you want to eliminate illegal dumping make it free to dispose of at a licensed facility,'' he said.

``As long as a fee is charged, unfortunately people will keep dumping the stuff illegally.''

Ms Piscopo was supportive of Cr Cummings' suggestion that removal should be free.

``That will stop idiots from getting their asbestos out and dumping it wherever,'' she said.

An angry Cr Cummings saw the pile of suspect material when he went to pick up his dry cleaning.

``I have been involved in the construction industry for seven years and I am an electrical fitter by trade,'' he said. ``As far as I can see it's definitely asbestos.''

The pile of material has since been removed by the council.
