Touching officials `totally unacceptable' says league

30 Jun, 2010 12:00 AM
PARRAMATTA District Rugby League Referees Association president Alan Shortall has called on the support all ``genuine rugby league followers and participants'' to ensure the safety of players and officials.

``We continue to make it known that touching an official at any level of the game is totally unacceptable, and that any other abuse of officials should not be tolerated in any way shape or form,'' Mr Shortall said.

``In recent weeks the association's members have been the victims of a number of serious and unsavoury incidents such as physical and verbal abuse which directly affect the retention and recruitment of referees.

``All players (regardless of age), officials (junior league and club), coaches, parents and spectators must be aware the recent actions of a minority of individuals will have a detrimental impact on the conduct of a safe and enjoyable junior league environment.''

Mr Shortall said while they were ``very proud'' of the referees' contribution to the growth and success of the Parramatta junior league, he wanted to stress four key messages that would ensure continued safe participation by everyone. They were:

Match officials should not be touched for any reason.

Match officials should not be verbally abused by any person in any capacity.

The referee's decision is final and any action against them for making decisions should not be tolerated.

Players must play within the laws and spirit of the game and allow referees to do their job.

Recruiting new referees is the next challenge for the Parramatta District Rugby League Referees Association.

``Any incident that impacts on the recruitment, development and retention of match officials will place in jeopardy the ability to provide competent and confident referees whose aim is to ensure safe participation for all,'' Mr Shortall said.

As a senior refereewho has just walked out of the sport in Canberra for this very reason, I can assure you there is one more step to add to this excellent list: the local judiciary MUST support the refeee who is subject to this misbehaviour. I wasn't, and there is no worse feeling than having your abuser walk away smirking with nothing to show for it, and the Judiciary just shrugs it's shoulders with indifference.
