Technology offers new way to learn

02 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
BLACKBOARDS and chalk are on their way into the dustbin of history with laptops, interactive whiteboards and tablet computers the new classroom furniture.

At Mother Teresa Primary School Westmead gone are the long rows of wooden desks, the four-legged chairs and the single class teacher.

The school, believed be the first new primary school in Parramatta in 40 years, opened for pupils on Monday morning.

Principal Gary Borg said using new technology, like smart boards and the iPod Touch, allowed the walls of the classroom to expand.

"How we went to school is very different to how these kids go to school," Mr Borg said.

"We are preparing them for a very different world.

"If there's an application on the iPod Touch that can help the students learn better then we will put that on there for them."

The large, open classrooms, in which two classes are taught, are designed so furniture can be moved around to support teaching, Mr Borg said.

"We can change the room to whatever we want. It's very exciting, particularly as it's a brand new school."

The school has 184 pupils enrolled in kindergarten to year 4 but will expand in the future to include the senior primary school years.

The students seemed very much at home during the first day in their new school.

Year 1 pupil Alana Mazlin said she was excited to return to school.

"I get to play with my friends and spend lots of time with them," she said.

Another pupil, Seth Clenshaw, seemed more excited about playing outside than on his laptop.

"My favourite thing about school is playtime and lunch time and recess," he said.

The school is part of the Westmead Catholic Education Precinct that includes Catherine McAuley Westmead and Parramatta Marist High School.
