HORSE drawn-carts rolled along the dirt track of Hunter Street, the year was 1820 and a small school in the middle of Parramatta took in its first students.
Parramatta Marist High, Australia's oldest Catholic school, will celebrate 190 years of teaching this year.
The school has moved twice and changed its name since its inception but after almost two centuries of education it is still achieving excellence, producing one of its best HSC results ever last year.
Marist (as its students affectionately know it), a non-selective school, beat a host of prestigious selective schools, to be ranked 10th last year for mathematics.
The school's principal, Br Patrick Howlett, said the results were a testament to the collaborative efforts of staff and students. ``The results are very pleasing, and reflect just how hard everyone worked throughout the year,'' he said. ``I have high expectations of the staff and the boys, and they continue to exceed them.''
An information evening for next year's enrolments will be held on March 17.
