Protest over care of refugees

18 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
THE treatment of asylum-seekers wishing to come to Australia will be highlighted at a protest meeting supported by the Socialist Alliance in Church Street Mall, Parramatta, on Tuesday, November24.

Meeting organiser Rachel Evans and representatives of trade unions and the Tamil and Palestinian communities would address the meeting.

``I am appalled at the treatment of these refugees, people who are fleeing detention camps, starvation and violence,'' Ms Evans said.

``Australia should show compassion and welcome these people.''

The meeting will call on the Federal Government to welcome Tamil asylum-seekers and put an end to its ``Indonesian solution''.

The meeting will start at 4pm.

A Welcome Refugees rally is planned for Sunday, November29, in Sydney.
