Holroyd residents say 'no' to Parramatta

20 Jan, 2009 11:44 AM
More than 170 residents attended a community consultation forum on proposed changes to bus routes in Holroyd, held yesterday at the council.

Following a state-wide review into bus routes, the Government is proposing to ''streamline'' services in Holroyd.

The mayor of Holroyd, Greg Cummings, has expressed his concern and believes the city will be disadvantaged if the plans go ahead.

Under the proposed changes, many services will be directed to Parramatta bypassing the commercial centres of Merrylands, Guildford and Greystanes.

Residents at yesterday's two-hour meeting expressed their dislike about being forced to go into Parramatta, rather than Merrylands and Greystanes - areas that are well serviced by a variety of shops including the soon to be expanded Stocklands mall.

Parramatta was too big, too busy and not aged-friendly, many of the residents said.

One resident who will be disadvantaged if the changes are approved is Gaby Hannemann, of South Wentworthville.

She relies on catching the bus home from Merrylands Road.

''It will be a great inconvenience because rather than being direct to South Wentworthville, which is five minutes down the road, they will take the long way around via Parramatta,'' she said.

''I catch a taxi to go into Merrylands but I won't be able to afford to catch one twice a day, several days a week.

''The buses are easy and convenient the way they are.''

A ministry of transport official attended the meeting to hear residents' concerns and promised to consider all submissions before any decisions were made.

Another community consultation will be held on Wednesday February 4, 6pm-7pm, at the Holroyd Centre in Miller Street, Merrylands.

RSVP to Di Tulloch on 9840 9871 or Alicia Hancock on 9840 9717 by February 2.

Email concerns to busfeedback@holroyd.nsw.gov.au or call NSW Bus Network, 1800005113 by February 6.

Also phone David Borger on 9637 1656 or email granville@parliament.nsw.gov.au

Just who are these people making decisions that are so against public opinion? As residents of Holroyd, we know what is best for us and we do not need outsiders to tell us differently.

I use Hopkinsons & Westbus. On no Westbus vehicle was there any literature detailing the changes. I believe this is because Westbus will be the big winners in the distribution of runs. Westbus doesn't have its customers concerns as a major priority, if they did their runs would at least be on time in school holidays. Their usual running is 10-15min late. I shudder to think how late they will be with the length of the proprosed runs no matter who is the company. I am totally in disbelief that we will have the regularity cut from 4 to 2 trips an hour. What is it with public transport management have they got shares in oil & auto companies as they are sure pushing people away from public transport.
