Forum tackles homophobia

24 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
HOMOPHOBIC violence in western Sydney is the topic of University of Western Sydney's first Open Forum for this year.

Police officers, anti-violence activists and representatives of the gay community will discuss the topic Being Out West tomorrow at the Parramatta campus.

The forum will provide an opportunity to discuss incidents of homophobic violence and hear about the strategies in place to prevent attacks and prosecute offenders.

Speakers at the forum include Greg Harland, a community representative who will share his story of homophobic violence in Blacktown; the NSW Police Force's corporate spokeswoman on gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex issues Superintendent Donna Adney; Vanessa Viaggio, of the Attorney-General's crime-prevention unit and Robert Knapman and Nancy deCastro, of the AIDS Council of NSW Anti-Violence Project.

Being Out West is an official 2010 Mardi Gras event. The forum is at 5.30pm for a 6pm start at UWS Parramatta campus, corner Victoria Road and James Ruse Drive, in building EB3.33.
