PARRAMATTA'S iconic St John's Cathedral (pictured) will receive state heritage listing to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the start of Lachlan Macquarie's term as NSW governor.
Premier Kristina Keneally announced the listing of the 207-year-old cathedral on Monday.
Other sites with a link to Macquarie Richmond Park in Richmond and Macquarie Place in Sydney are also being placed on the State Heritage Register to mark the celebrations.
``Lachlan Macquarie is a significant part of the history of our state and preserving these icons of the Macquarie era is a fitting tribute to his leadership and vision,'' Ms Keneally said.
``I'm proud we can launch this fantastic year-long calendar of events on what would have been Governor Macquarie's 248th birthday.
``More than 50 events are already locked into the calendar for the bicentenary with more to come.''
Events planned for this year include an exhibition of Lachlan Macquarie's personal letters, journals, maps and paintings at the State Library, a performance of Beethoven's opera Fidelio by the Friends of Old Government House and a series of archaeological digs for schoolchildren run by the Belgenny Farm Trust.
