Budget boost for future bikeways

21 May, 2008 10:59 AM
Cycleways in Parramatta are set to become a model for future transport systems throughout Australia due to a $1.5 million injection from the federal budget.

The funds will upgrade the Parramatta-to-Blacktown cycleway to link paths, build bridges and manage weeds along the Toongabbie Creek route.

Lord Mayor Paul Barber said the upgrading would help the council implement its 2008 bike plan which aims to have 5 per cent of the local population riding a bicycle to work by 2021.

"At a time when Australia has an obesity problem of epidemic proportions, it is vital that simple measures like creating safe and accessible cycleways are made a priority for local councils around the country,'' he said.

He thanked Federal Parramatta MP Julie Owens for fighting "long and hard'' for local cycleways.

Sporting clubs will reap the benefit of a $150,000 allocation from the federal budget to upgrade the soccer fields at Binalong Park in Toongabbie.

Parramatta MP Julie Owens lobbied for the upgrading during last year's federal election campaign.

"The reality is that all the playing fields in the Parramatta area need a lot of work,'' she said.

"Anyone who has ever used the toilet blocks, or played their sport on dry and dusty surfaces, will know that.

"I am hoping this is just a down payment for the future, because sporting clubs are quite remarkable community organisations which do an incredible amount of networking across the community.

"Binalong Park is one of the bigger facilities in the area and the money will help upgrade players' toilets and changing rooms as well as seating and fencing.''
