THE Lower Prospect Canal Cycleway will be reopened to cyclists on weekends, starting Saturday, October 31.
A joint statement on the re-opening by the Canal Reserve Action Group (CRAG) and mining giant Boral last week was a sign the two have settled their differences after a recent agreement was reached on a safe crossing for a new major road.
Reconciliation Road will link Prospect and Wetherill Park through the third and final stage of the redevelopment of the former Prospect gravel quarry in what is now called the Southern Employment Lands.
The cycleway has been closed since April 2008 during construction of the road and stormwater harvesting and detention basins on the land.
CRAG and Boral have agreed construction has now reached a point where the cycleway can be safely re-opened during daylight hours from 2pm to 7pm each Saturday and Sunday.
All construction on the site will be halted during those hours.
CRAG president Steve Norton welcomed the move because it would once again provide community access to the recreation areas surrounding the Prospect Reservoir.
Mr Norton said CRAG and Boral would continue to work together on the progressive reopening of the cycleway and the establishment of a permanent safe crossing for cyclists and pedestrians.
