$5.4m housing relief

A new public housing complex in North Parramatta will house more than 70 people and help alleviate housing stress in the area.

The development in Buller Street includes 24 units on land which was previously occupied by four older cottages.

The $5.4million Housing NSW project was opened by Housing Minister Matt Brown and Parramatta MP Tanya Gadiel on Tuesday, March 25. Mr Brown said the four older cottages no longer met the needs of public housing residents.

He said the new block had been designed to reflect the heritage nature of the Parramatta area and would help meet the growing demand for affordable housing for those in need in the area.

It will accommodate a mix of tenants including elderly people and families.

The complex has four one-bedroom, 16 two-bedroom and four three-bedroom units, four of which can be adapted to suit the needs of people with disabilities.

Ms Gadiel said the units were near public transport and close to local shops, schools, medical and recreational facilities.

"Each unit is self contained and features generous living and kitchen areas, serviced by two lifts and underground car parking," Mr Brown said.

"I have committed Housing NSW to become a leader in adapting to climate change so all units have gas hot water systems, dual flush toilets and water saving showerheads."
