The fling's her thing

SHE can tap and pirouette with ease but this Winston Hills dancer prefers to jig to the sound of bagpipes.

Eighteen-year-old Megan Lloyd is a Scottish highland dancer who has been selected to perform in the world famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo when it arrives in Australia in February.

``It's really exciting,'' Megan said.

``It's always been a dream of mine so it was such a nice surprise to be selected.''

Next year will be only the third time in its 200-year history the show has ventured outside the walls of Edinburgh Castle.

When it last visited Sydney in 2005, more than 150,000 people attended the military spectacular at Sydney Football Stadium.

Megan said it would be daunting to perform in front of so many people but: ``It'll be an amazing experience''.

Megan, whose Scottish blood comes from her maternal grandparents, took up highland dancing along with tap and ballet when she was seven.

Her love of the Scottish dance, which originated as a battle dance, comes from her mother Carolyn Woollett an accomplished highland dancing teacher.

``There was just something about it that I really loved,'' she said. ``Maybe it was the music.''

Megan will bunker down with 25 other Australian highland dancers, for a week of solid rehearsals on January 29.

They will then be joined by 1500 performers from around the world.
