PARRAMATTA Lord Mayor Paul Garrard is backing the Sydney CBD Metro as a start to improving western Sydney's public transport which is nearing crisis point.
Cr Garrard said the recent opposition by the Local Government Association of the CBD Metro demonstrated that inner-Sydney residents and councils did not fully appreciate the stress on public transport in western Sydney.
Cr Garrard said there would be no West Metro to Westmead if there were no CBD Metro.
``[Inner-Sydney councils and residents] do not understand that this will deliver capacity to people around areas like Leichhardt to be able to get to work much easier,'' Cr Garrard said.
``What we have at the moment are thousands and thousands of people driving to get to the city and the system is overstretched.
``Parramatta is a destination, not just a departure city.
``A great number of people attend Westmead Hospital.
``How do you get from Rozelle to Westmead?
``You drive.''
Cr Garrard said a meeting of traffic engineers at Parramatta on Friday estimated that 54per cent of Sydney's public transport was in a crisis.
He was critical of the State Government which he said had a ``terrible record'' of not keeping transport promises such as the Parramatta-to-Chatswood rail link.
He was also critical of the lack of services on the Cumberland railway line.
``I would like to think that the Federal Government is going to help address the transport problems in western Sydney,'' he said.
