Scott Fitzgerald is now regarded as a great author, he was so ignored in the years before his death in 1940 that he would buy copies of his own books just to have a few sales. Luhrmann says that in the week the movie opened in the US, The Great Gatsby sold more copies than in Fitzgerald's entire lifetime.
